Who we are

What we collect

• Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard request logs (IP address, user agent, page requested, time) for security and error diagnosis. These are retained for a short, fixed period by the host and are not used to build profiles.
• Analytics. [Name your analytics tool, e.g. a privacy-focused, cookie-less analytics service, or state that none is used.] We do not use advertising trackers.
• Affiliate clicks. When you click an affiliate link we record that a click happened, which page section it came from, and the time — not who you are. The provider you land on has its own privacy policy.
• Contact. If you email us, we keep the email to reply to it.

The IP and leak-test tools

The "What is my IP" and leak-test tools show you information about your own connection. Your IP address is processed to generate that answer and, where enabled, sent to a geolocation provider to look up the ISP and location. The result is returned to your browser and is not stored by us.

The chat assistant

Messages you send to Emilia, our assistant, are forwarded to OpenAI to generate a reply, along with the site's own test data about VPNs. We do not keep a copy of the conversation unless you ask her to email you something, in which case we store a one-line summary of what you were looking for so the email makes sense. Do not type anything into the chat you would not want processed by a third party — passwords, card numbers or account details are never needed and should never be entered.

The email list

If you ask us to email you — a shortlist, a renewal warning, a price alert or the monthly test results — we store your email address, the first name you gave if you gave one, which of those things you asked for, the page you were on, the VPN you were looking at, the date, and the IP address the request came from. The IP and the wording of what you agreed to are kept as a record that you asked, which the law requires us to be able to show.

You will get a confirmation email first; nothing else is sent until you click the link in it. We use MailerLite to send and to handle unsubscribes, so your address is stored on their systems too. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and it works immediately — you can also use the link in any message we send you, or reply and ask. We never sell, rent or share the list, and we do not send anything you did not tick.

Nothing on this site is gated behind an email address. The reviews, comparisons and tools are free whether or not you subscribe, and the assistant will help you either way.

Cookies and browser storage

We do not set advertising cookies. The site may use browser storage for small conveniences such as remembering a sort order; that data stays in your browser.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold, or to object to its processing. Email contact@topratedvpn.org and we will respond within 30 days.
