NordVPN Basic vs Plus vs Ultimate: Which Tier?
NordVPN sells the same VPN three times with extras bolted on. What each tier adds, what those extras cost separately, and why Basic is usually right.

The short version
The VPN is the same in all three tiers.
Same servers, same speeds, same streaming results, same audited no-logs policy, same apps. Every number in our NordVPN review applies identically whether you buy the cheapest tier or the most expensive one.
What changes is what else is in the bundle. So the question is not "which is the better VPN" — it is "do I want to buy a password manager, cloud storage and an insurance policy from my VPN company?"
For most people the answer is no, and Basic is the right buy.
What each tier adds
Basic — the VPN. Threat Protection (NordVPN's ad, tracker and malware blocking) is included here, which matters because it is the one extra that is genuinely part of the VPN rather than a separate product.
Plus — adds NordPass, a password manager, and a data-breach scanner that checks your email against known breaches.
Ultimate — adds cyber insurance, an identity-theft policy underwritten by a third party, and 1 TB of NordLocker, encrypted cloud storage.
The honest way to price it
Work out what you would pay for the extras separately, and be honest about whether you would actually pay it.
A password manager. Bitwarden's free tier covers most people's needs completely. Your browser has one built in. Apple and Google both include one. If you are currently paying for 1Password or Dashlane, then Plus genuinely consolidates two bills into one and is worth the difference. If you are not paying for one today, the honest question is whether you would start — and the answer is usually no, which makes the upgrade a premium for something you will set up once and never think about.
Cloud storage. 1 TB is a real amount, and NordLocker's encryption is a real feature. But compare it against what you already pay Google, Apple or Dropbox, because most people are already buying storage somewhere and adding a second provider does not reduce that bill.
Cyber insurance. This is the one to read properly rather than value from the marketing. It is a policy with eligibility conditions, coverage limits and a claims process. Insurance bundled free with something else is generally priced by the seller at what it costs them, not at what it would cost you to buy — which is why it looks generous in a comparison table.
Our recommendation
Buy Basic unless you can name, specifically, the paid product you are replacing.
That is the whole test. "It is only a bit more" is how tier pricing works — the increments are designed to be individually small and collectively significant across a two-year term. If you cannot say which existing subscription Plus or Ultimate cancels, you are adding a bill rather than consolidating one.
Buy Plus if you pay for a password manager today and would happily move to NordPass.
Buy Ultimate if you specifically want the encrypted storage and have priced it against what you already pay elsewhere.
Two things to check at the checkout
The tier you pick is the tier you are paying for until the term ends. You can downgrade at renewal but not mid-term, and there is no partial refund of the difference. On a two-year plan that is a long commitment to a decision made in thirty seconds at a checkout.
All three tiers renew at the one-year rate, not at the introductory price. The gap between tiers grows in absolute terms when the base price rises, so a small upgrade today is a larger one at renewal. Our price calculator prices the intro term and the renewals separately.

What is the difference between NordVPN Basic, Plus and Ultimate?
The VPN is identical in all three — same servers, same speeds, same apps, same no-logs policy. Basic is the VPN on its own. Plus adds the NordPass password manager and a data-breach scanner. Ultimate adds cyber insurance and 1 TB of NordLocker encrypted storage. You are not buying a better VPN by going up the tiers; you are buying other products alongside it.
Which NordVPN plan should I buy?
Basic, for most people. Plus is worth it only if you would otherwise pay for a password manager — and if you already use one, or use the free tier of Bitwarden or your browser's built-in manager, you are paying twice. Ultimate is worth it only if you specifically want the cloud storage; the cyber insurance has conditions worth reading before valuing it.
Is NordVPN Plus worth the extra?
It comes down to one question: do you pay for a password manager today? If yes, Plus is probably cheaper than buying both separately and it is a reasonable consolidation. If no — and most people do not — you are paying a monthly premium for a product you will install once and forget.
Does Ultimate make the VPN faster?
No. Speed, server access, streaming, protocols and the privacy policy are identical across all three tiers. Nothing about the VPN itself changes. Any page telling you the top tier is a better VPN has not checked.
What is NordVPN's cyber insurance?
An identity-theft policy bundled with the Ultimate tier, underwritten by a third party, with eligibility conditions and a claims process attached. It is not worthless, but it is the kind of benefit that is easy to price highly in marketing and hard to claim on. Read the policy terms and decide what it is worth to you rather than accepting the headline figure.
Can I downgrade later?
Yes, at renewal. What you cannot do is get a refund of the difference partway through a two-year term, so the tier you pick at checkout is the one you are paying for until the term ends. That is the argument for starting at Basic and moving up if you find you want the extras.
