NordVPN Review (2026): Strong Privacy Case, Steepest Renewal of the Ten

Privacy and logging: audited, RAM-only, Panama

Privacy is 30% of every score on this site, and it is where NordVPN makes its strongest case. The no-logs policy has been checked by outside auditors more than once, the whole server fleet runs from RAM so a seized or rebooted machine holds nothing, and the company is headquartered in Panama, which has no mandatory data-retention law and sits outside the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes alliances.

We have not run leak tests on NordVPN ourselves, so there is no leak result here to report. What is checkable without installing it: the kill switch is enabled by default on the desktop apps, which is the right call for people who will never open the settings, and the apps are available on every platform NordVPN lists. Run the DNS leak test on your own connection once you have it — that is the result that matters to you anyway.

Speed

We have not measured NordVPN's speed ourselves. What actually decides it for you: NordVPN ships NordLynx, its WireGuard-based protocol, which is the fastest widely deployed option, plus OpenVPN for networks that block WireGuard and NordWhisper for places that filter VPN traffic itself. With 118 countries of coverage — the widest of the ten VPNs on this site — the odds of a server near you are good, and distance to that server is what actually costs you throughput and latency, not the provider's marketing. A 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps; any current VPN on a nearby server clears that by a wide margin, so the real question is whether a server exists close to where you are.

Streaming

We have not tested what NordVPN unblocks. Its SmartPlay DNS feature is built to route devices that can't run the app itself, such as some smart TVs, which at least removes device support as a variable. Streaming access changes weekly as services and VPNs trade IP ranges back and forth, so any matrix — ours or anyone else's — describes a day that has already passed. Torrenting: allowed, but no port forwarding

P2P is allowed on dedicated P2P servers, and the app switches to one automatically when it detects torrent traffic. We have not measured speed on those servers ourselves. The gap is port forwarding: NordVPN doesn't offer it, which matters if you seed a lot or run a private tracker with ratio requirements. Apps and ease of use

The apps look the same on every platform — a map, a quick-connect button, a server list — and the important settings (kill switch, auto-connect on untrusted Wi-Fi, Threat Protection) are one screen away. There are native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux (now with a GUI), iOS, Android, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV, plus browser extensions and router firmware.

Threat Protection Pro, included on the Plus tier and above, blocks ads, trackers and malicious downloads at the system level and works even when the VPN is off. Meshnet lets you link your own devices into a private network, useful for reaching a home PC from a laptop or for LAN gaming across the internet. Ten simultaneous connections is enough for a household; it isn't unlimited like Surfshark or PIA.

Live chat is available around the clock, alongside email and a help centre. We have not put response times to a test ourselves. The setup guides for routers are more thorough than most providers offer.

Is NordVPN safe?

Yes, on the evidence anyone can check: repeated independent audits of the no-logs claim, RAM-only servers and a Panama jurisdiction, which has no mandatory data-retention law. What we cannot add to that is a leak test of our own — we have not run one. NordVPN did suffer a server breach in 2018 at a third-party data centre in Finland; the company disclosed it, moved to RAM-only infrastructure and started the audit programme partly in response. That is the right way to handle an incident, and nothing since has contradicted the policy.

Is NordVPN worth it?
