Privacy and logging

Surfshark's privacy setup mirrors its sibling NordVPN's: a no-logs policy audited by Deloitte in 2025, servers that run entirely in RAM, and a "Nexus" network design that can rotate your IP mid-session without dropping the connection. We have not run leak tests ourselves — run the free DNS leak test and WebRTC leak test on your own connection once you have it.

The one point people raise is jurisdiction. Surfshark is registered in the Netherlands, a member of the 9-Eyes intelligence alliance. That would matter if the company kept logs; the audit and RAM-only design are there to make sure there is nothing to request. Unlike NordVPN or PIA, Surfshark's no-logs claim hasn't been tested by a real subpoena or seizure yet — the audit is the strongest evidence there is so far, which is why the privacy sub-score here sits a step behind theirs.

Speed

We have not measured Surfshark's speed ourselves. WireGuard is the default protocol and the one to leave on; OpenVPN and IKEv2 are there for awkward networks. Surfshark's network spans 100 countries, close to the top of this list, so a nearby server is likely wherever you are — and proximity, not the provider's marketing, is what actually decides your throughput. A 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps, which any current VPN clears by a wide margin on a nearby server.

Streaming

We have not checked what Surfshark unblocks, so there is no streaming result here. What is worth knowing instead: the 30-day refund window is long enough to test every service you care about yourself, on your own connection, and get your money back if it fails. That is a better answer than anyone's month-old matrix.

Torrenting

P2P is allowed on all servers, with no separate list to hunt through. We have not measured torrenting speed ourselves. Missing, as with NordVPN, is port forwarding — for most torrent users that is irrelevant; for anyone who seeds to keep a ratio it is a reason to pick PIA or Proton instead.

Apps and ease of use

The apps are clean and consistent across Windows, macOS, Linux (with a real GUI now), iOS, Android, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. Two features stand out: CleanWeb, which blocks ads, trackers and malware domains, and Bypasser, Surfshark's name for split tunnelling, which lets a banking app or a printer skip the VPN. Dynamic MultiHop lets you choose both hops of a double-VPN route, which is rarer than it sounds.

Higher plan tiers bundle an antivirus, a private search engine and Alternative ID, which generates a disposable email and identity for sign-ups. They are decent, but the VPN alone is the reason to buy.

Customer support

Surfshark lists 24/7 live chat. We have not used it, so we cannot tell you how quickly it answers or how a refund request goes. The written guides are clear, including a good one on setting up the VPN on a router.

Is Surfshark safe?

Yes. Audited no-logs, RAM-only servers and modern protocols put it in the same tier as NordVPN on paper. We have not run leak tests ourselves. The Netherlands jurisdiction is the only mark against it, and the no-logs architecture is the answer to it.

Is Surfshark worth it?

At $2.49 a month on the 2-year plan, with no device limit, Surfshark is one of the easiest recommendations in this ranking on price and device count alone — we have not measured how it compares to NordVPN on speed or streaming. You get every device in the house covered for less money than the top three's per-device plans. Monthly billing is the exception — at $16.45 a month it is one of the pricier options, so commit to a long plan or don't buy it.

Buy it for a household, for a tight budget, or for anyone who wants a NordVPN-sibling product on RAM-only infrastructure. Skip it if you seed torrents heavily (no port forwarding), or if you specifically want a jurisdiction outside the intelligence alliances — in which case Proton VPN in Switzerland is the pick.
