Speed claims are cheap, and we're not going to add another unverified one. We have not run our own throughput tests, so this page doesn't rank by a number we made up — it ranks by what's actually within a provider's control: which protocol it uses, how many countries it covers (so a genuinely nearby server exists), and whether that protocol is fast by design.

We don't know, and neither does anyone claiming a single number — actual throughput depends on your line, the server's distance and its load at that moment, all of which change constantly. How much speed does a VPN lose?
It varies by distance and protocol more than by provider. WireGuard-based connections (NordLynx, Lightway, standard WireGuard) lose the least overhead; a nearby server loses far less than a distant one regardless of which VPN you use. We have not measured exact percentages ourselves.
Which VPN protocol is fastest?
WireGuard and its derivatives — NordLynx, Surfshark's WireGuard, ExpressVPN's Lightway. OpenVPN is noticeably slower and IKEv2 sits between.
Does a faster VPN mean lower ping?
Not necessarily — they're different measurements. Throughput is about bandwidth; ping is about the round-trip to a server. We have not measured either for these providers; test both on the server you'd actually use.
