No — every VPN we tested added latency, from 4 ms to 14 ms. Here are the numbers, and the three specific situations where a VPN genuinely lowers ping anyway.

The short answer

Usually not. A VPN adds a detour, and in our tests every single provider added latency — between 4 ms and 14 ms on a nearby server. It only lowers ping in three specific cases: when your ISP is throttling game traffic, when it is routing you badly, or when your new IP puts you in a nearer matchmaking region.

There is an entire genre of VPN marketing built on the phrase "reduce lag", so we measured it properly: ping to four game servers, with and without each of the ten VPNs we rate, three runs per server, median reported, on a wired 940 Mbps line.

Every single provider added latency. Not one reduced it.

For context on what those numbers mean: 4 ms is beneath what almost anyone can perceive. 14 ms is roughly one frame at 60 fps — a competitive player might feel it in a fast shooter; nobody will notice it in an MMO or a strategy game.

The more useful finding is how small the whole spread is. The difference between the best and worst VPN in our ranking is 10 ms. The difference between a nearby server and a distant one, on the same provider, was over 150 ms. Which server you pick matters roughly fifteen times more than which company you pay.

Why a VPN adds latency at all

Without a VPN, your packets go from your router to your ISP, across whatever networks sit between, to the game server. With one, they go from your router to your ISP, to the VPN server, and then to the game server. You have added a stop.

That stop costs two things.

Distance. Light in fibre covers roughly 200 km per millisecond, and the route is never a straight line. Every extra thousand kilometres is unavoidable delay.

Processing. Encrypting a packet, sending it, decrypting it at the other end. Modern protocols made this almost free — WireGuard and its variants (NordLynx, Lightway) are lean enough that encryption costs under a millisecond on any machine made this decade. OpenVPN is not; we measured 3–5 ms of pure protocol overhead switching between them on the same server.

So distance is what you are actually paying for. A server in your own city costs very little. One on the other side of the world costs a lot, and no gaming mode, premium tier or marketing claim changes that.

The three cases where a VPN actually lowers ping

1. Your ISP is throttling game traffic

Some ISPs shape traffic by type, especially at peak hours, and game and P2P traffic are common targets. If that is happening to you, your ping is already being taxed — and the tax is usually much bigger than 4–14 ms.

A VPN encrypts the connection, so your ISP can see that you are sending data and how much, but not what kind. Traffic it cannot classify is traffic it generally cannot shape. People in this situation see genuine, sometimes dramatic improvements, and they are the source of most "a VPN fixed my lag" stories online.

How to tell if this is you: your ping is fine at 3pm and terrible at 9pm on a connection that is not otherwise saturated. That daily pattern is the signature. Test it — run the game at both times with and without a VPN and write the four numbers down. Ten minutes of that tells you more about your own connection than any article can, including this one.

2. Your ISP is routing you badly

Ping is not distance, it is route quality. Two players the same distance from a server can have very different pings if one ISP hands traffic off sensibly and the other sends it three cities out of the way first. Peering disputes cause this, and they are invisible to you.

Occasionally a VPN's network has a better route to the game's data centre than your ISP does, and you come out ahead even after paying the detour cost. We saw this once across four servers and ten providers — it is real but unpredictable. You cannot know in advance; you can only test.

3. The game matches you to a different region

This one is not about latency at all. Some games assign your server region from your IP address, and changing the IP can land you on a server genuinely closer to you than the default you were getting. That is a real benefit for players in countries with no local servers.

It cuts both ways, and it is worth being careful. Deliberately connecting to a distant region to get easier opponents — the "bot lobby" trick — gives you worse ping, breaks the terms of service of most competitive games, and gets accounts banned. Riot, in particular, enforces this. We are not going to explain how to do it.

What a VPN will never fix

  • Congested Wi-Fi. If you are on 2.4 GHz with a microwave between you and the router, fix that first. An ethernet cable beats every VPN configuration.
  • An overloaded game server. If everyone in the lobby is lagging, it is the server, and you cannot route around it.
  • A slow connection. Ping and bandwidth are different things. A VPN does not add bandwidth.
  • Distance to the only server that exists. If the nearest official server for your game is 8,000 km away, that is your floor.
  • Packet loss on your own line. A failing cable or a dying router will keep losing packets through an encrypted tunnel exactly as it did before.

If you are going to use one anyway

    Pick the nearest server, not the 'gaming' one

    Marketing labels are marketing. Distance is physics. Check the load percentage too — a slightly further server at 20% often beats the nearest one at 90%.

    Set the protocol to WireGuard explicitly

    Not "Automatic", which picks OpenVPN on some networks. This was worth 3–5 ms in our tests — more than the gap between most providers.

    Use a cable

    A VPN over congested Wi-Fi gets blamed for problems that were already there.

    Split-tunnel the game out if you only wanted the VPN for something else

So should you use one while gaming?

On a healthy connection with a local server and no throttling: no. You will pay a few milliseconds for nothing.

If you are being throttled, badly routed, stuck behind a network that blocks game servers, or you stream and want the DDoS protection: yes, and the cost is fair. Pick the provider with the smallest number in the table above and a server near you.

And if you take one thing from this page, take the test rather than the conclusion. Ten minutes with the in-game netgraph, at two different times of day, with the VPN on and off, will tell you which of these situations you are actually in.

Common questions

Does a VPN reduce ping in games?

Not on its own. Routing your traffic through an extra server almost always adds a few milliseconds — in our tests, between 4 ms on NordVPN and 14 ms on Windscribe. A VPN lowers ping only when it bypasses something that was already slowing you down: ISP throttling or bad routing. Or when the new IP puts you in a closer matchmaking region.

How much ping does a VPN add?

Between 4 ms and 14 ms in our September tests, on a nearby server. Connecting to a distant country is a completely different matter — a UK-to-Singapore hop added over 150 ms on every provider, because that is the time light takes to make the trip and no software changes it.

Can a VPN stop lag spikes?

Sometimes, and this is where a VPN genuinely helps. If your spikes come from your ISP shaping game or P2P traffic at peak hours, encrypting the connection hides what kind of traffic it is, and the shaping stops applying. If they come from congested Wi-Fi or an overloaded game server, a VPN changes nothing.

Which VPN adds the least ping?

NordVPN, at 4 ms on a nearby server. Surfshark added 6 ms, ExpressVPN 7 ms and Mullvad 8 ms. The gap between best and worst across all ten was 10 ms — about half a frame at 60 fps, which most people cannot feel.

Should I use a VPN for competitive gaming?

Only for a specific reason — throttling, a blocked network, DDoS protection if you stream. For pure competitive play on a healthy connection, a direct connection is better, and anyone telling you a VPN improves your reaction time is selling something.

Does WireGuard have lower ping than OpenVPN?

Yes, measurably. On the same provider and the same server, switching from OpenVPN to WireGuard cut 3–5 ms in our tests and made reconnection after a dropped connection far faster. If your app defaults to OpenVPN or Automatic, set it to WireGuard explicitly.

Can a VPN help with ping on console?

Only through a router, since consoles cannot run VPN apps. The same rules apply: it costs a few milliseconds unless it is bypassing throttling. Given the router setup involved, it is worth doing only if you have confirmed your ISP is shaping game traffic.
