Answer the questions above and this tells you which country to connect to, why, and which of the ten VPNs we test handles that particular hop best. The answer is the nearest server far more often than the internet suggests — the point of the tool is knowing the exceptions.
About this tool
Almost every VPN app opens on a list of countries with no guidance beyond a flag and a load percentage, and the advice you find for filling that gap is usually wrong in the same direction: pick somewhere far away, somewhere privacy-friendly, somewhere that sounds secure. Distance is a cost, not a feature. This tool exists to say so with numbers attached.
The default answer, and why it holds
For everyday browsing, public Wi-Fi, torrenting, gaming and privacy, the right server is the nearest one. Your IP is hidden from websites and your traffic is hidden from your ISP whether the server is twenty miles away or eight thousand — the encryption does not change. What changes is the round trip, and it changes a great deal. On our rig the drop between a provider's nearest servers and its most distant ones is routinely a third to a half of the bandwidth, with latency scaling the same way.
The exceptions worth knowing
Streaming is the real one. A service decides what you can watch from the country your IP is in, so the server has to be in that country and no reasoning about privacy changes it. A game server abroad is the second: if you are playing on a foreign server anyway, the VPN server belongs in that country rather than yours. And a country-level block is the third, where the requirement is obfuscation rather than a particular flag — the nearest server outside the filter is still the right one.
Two beliefs this tool is arguing with
The first is that a distant server is more private. The jurisdiction that matters is the company's, not the server's: a provider incorporated in a country with data-retention law does not escape it by putting a machine in Switzerland. The second is that the server's country matters for torrenting. It barely does — the provider's logging policy is the variable, and the setting that genuinely changes your outcome is connecting to a server the provider actually labels for P2P.

Questions people ask
Which VPN server location is best?
The nearest one, unless you have a specific reason otherwise. Distance is the dominant cost in both speed and latency, and a server in your own city hides your IP from websites and your traffic from your ISP exactly as well as one on the other side of the world. Change country for a catalogue, a blocked service or a game server abroad — not on principle.
Does a distant server make me more private?
No. The encryption does not get stronger with distance, and the jurisdiction that matters is the company's rather than the server's. A server in Panama run by a provider that keeps logs protects you less than one down the road run by a provider that does not. If you want a second layer, multi-hop actually separates the entry and exit points; distance alone does not.
Which country do I need for Netflix?
The one whose catalogue you want — Netflix shows you the library of the country your IP appears to be in. For most people asking, that is the United States or Japan. The tool names the country per service, because the answer differs: BBC iPlayer needs the UK and asks about a TV licence, and DAZN is tied to the country you subscribed in rather than the one showing the event.
Why is my VPN slow on a far server?
Because every packet makes the round trip. On our rig the same providers that hold 700 Mbps nearby drop to a fraction of that on the longest hops, and latency roughly tracks the distance. If a VPN feels slow for no reason, the usual cause is that it is still connected to a country somebody picked for one evening's viewing weeks ago.
Does the server country matter for torrenting?
Far less than people assume. What protects you is the provider's logging policy and jurisdiction, not the flag on the server. What does matter is connecting to a server your provider labels for P2P — several permit it only on a subset, and connecting elsewhere means the traffic is silently dropped, which looks exactly like a dead tracker.

Our own tests. Every VPN is re-measured monthly on the same 940 Mbps line across US East, UK, Singapore, Australia, 3 runs per server, median reported. The current figures are from 2026-09-04. Your absolute speeds will differ — the shape of the drop-off between a near and a far server is the part that transfers.
