Windscribe Review (2026): Build Your Own Plan, But Read the Refund Terms

Privacy and logging

Windscribe's no-logs policy covers the things that matter — no browsing history, no connection timestamps tied to an account, no IP logging. It keeps the total bandwidth used in a month, which is unavoidable for a service with a data-capped free tier, and the timestamp of your last connection so it can expire dormant accounts.

Packetlabs audited it in 2024. The clients are open-source, so the code doing the tunnelling can be inspected rather than trusted. Leak tests were clean on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and the kill switch held when we killed the tunnel mid-transfer.

Two things keep the privacy sub-score at 8.4 rather than higher.

Canada is a Five Eyes member. There is no mandatory VPN data retention there, and Windscribe has published transparency reports showing it produced nothing usable in response to requests. But the jurisdiction is a worse starting point than Switzerland, Panama or the British Virgin Islands, and it is a fair thing to weigh.

Servers are not RAM-only. The top five all run from memory, so a seized machine contains nothing. Windscribe's do not, which means the no-logs policy is a matter of configuration rather than physics. That is a real difference in kind, not just degree.

There is one incident worth knowing about: in 2021 two Windscribe servers in Ukraine were seized, and the company disclosed that they had not been configured as intended — an OpenVPN key was recoverable from them. Windscribe published the details itself, changed its server setup afterwards and moved towards its current architecture. Self-disclosing a failure is better behaviour than most, and the underlying fact — that a seized server held something useful — is why RAM-only matters.

Speed

Windscribe averaged 445 Mbps on our 940 Mbps line, tenth of the ten. US East reached 520 Mbps, the UK 470, Singapore 380 and Australia 410. Added latency was 14 ms, the highest we measured.

Context matters here. Last place on our chart is still eighteen times what 4K streaming needs, and about 45% of a very fast line. Nobody browsing, streaming or working over this will feel it. What it does mean is that Windscribe is not the pick if you regularly move large files, and that 14 ms is the worst number on the site for gaming — though it is still only about one frame at 60 fps.

Netflix US, UK, Canada and Australia, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Max, Paramount+ and Peacock all worked, mostly on Windscribe's "Windflix" servers, which are its streaming-optimised subset. Netflix Japan, Prime Video, Disney+, DAZN and ITVX failed.

Nine of fourteen is mid-table — better than Mullvad and IPVanish, well behind NordVPN and Surfshark. The Windflix servers are a small labelled set rather than the whole network, so you do need to know to use them; on ordinary servers the results were noticeably worse.

Torrenting

P2P is allowed on most servers, and port forwarding is available on paid plans — configurable from the web account with a choice of ephemeral or static ports.

That last feature is the reason to take Windscribe seriously for this despite the mid-table speeds. Only four VPNs we rate still offer it, and without it seeding is poor and ratio-enforcing trackers notice. Combined with unlimited devices and an always-available kill switch, this is a competent torrenting setup. PIA is faster and cheaper; Proton VPN is more private. Windscribe's case is that the build-a-plan pricing can make it the cheapest of the three if you only need one or two countries.

Apps and ease of use

The apps are more capable than they first appear. The obvious things are all there — kill switch (called Firewall), split tunnelling, multi-hop, auto-connect on untrusted networks — plus a few that are not common: WStunnel and Stealth protocols for getting through networks that block VPNs, and a configuration generator for routers.

R.O.B.E.R.T. is the standout. It is DNS-level blocking with per-category control: ads, trackers, malware, cryptomining, plus optional blocks for social, gambling, adult content and more, with custom allow and block lists on top. Because it operates at DNS level it covers every app on the device rather than just the browser, and in practice it replaced our ad-blocking extension entirely during testing.

Unlimited simultaneous connections, and native apps on every platform including Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV.

The weak spot is support: a chatbot first, email behind it, no live human chat and no phone. The community subreddit is unusually active and often faster than the official route, which is a workaround rather than a feature.

Pricing: the interesting part, and the catch

Three ways to buy, which is two more than anyone else offers.

Free. 10 GB a month, ten-plus locations, same no-logs policy. Genuinely usable for occasional needs.

Build-a-plan. About $1 per month per location, $3 minimum. If you only ever connect to one country, this is the cheapest legitimate VPN available anywhere — nothing else lets you buy a slice of the network.

Pro. $5.75 a month on the annual plan, unlimited everything. Note what that renews at: the same rate. Windscribe does not use an introductory price that jumps later, which over three years makes it better value than the sticker price suggests. Our price calculator shows the difference.

The catch is the refund. Three days, and under 10 GB of usage. Every other VPN we rate gives you 30 days; CyberGhost gives 45. Three days is not enough to properly evaluate a VPN, and it is the main reason to be careful here.

The honest counter-argument: the free tier is the trial. You can test speeds, check whether it unblocks what you watch and see whether R.O.B.E.R.T. breaks anything, all before paying. Used that way the short refund window matters much less — but you have to use it that way deliberately.

Customer support

Chatbot, email, help centre and an active subreddit. No live chat with a person, no phone. Email replies took about a day.

Is Windscribe safe?

Technically yes — audited, open-source clients, clean leak tests, a working kill switch and a company that discloses its own incidents. The reservations are structural rather than behavioural: Canadian jurisdiction and servers that are not RAM-only. For ordinary privacy from an ISP or a café network, it is entirely adequate. For a threat model where a server seizure is a realistic concern, the top five are a better fit.

Is Windscribe worth it?

On build-a-plan, if you need one or two countries: yes, and nothing else comes close on price. On the free tier: yes, obviously, it costs nothing. On the full Pro plan at $5.75: it is competing with NordVPN at $3.39 and Surfshark at $2.19, both of which are faster and unblock more — so the case rests on port forwarding, unlimited devices, R.O.B.E.R.T. and a renewal price that does not jump.

Who should buy Windscribe — and who shouldn't

Buy it if you only need one or two countries and build-a-plan makes it $3 a month; if you want a free tier that is actually useful; if you want serious DNS-level blocking across every app; or if you seed torrents and want port forwarding without paying more.

Don't buy a long plan on impulse — three days is not a real evaluation window, so use the free tier first. And look elsewhere if you want top speeds, the widest streaming coverage, or a jurisdiction outside Five Eyes.
