About this tool
Your IP address is the one piece of information you cannot avoid handing over. It travels with every request your browser makes, because the server needs somewhere to send the answer. That makes it useful and unavoidable — and also the single most convenient way to recognise you.
What the panel above is telling you
The address itself is read straight from your request. The location is a database lookup: blocks of addresses are registered to providers, and those registrations carry a rough location. It is accurate to the city more often than not, and occasionally out by a long way on mobile networks. The network line names the company that owns the address block, which is how the check underneath works — a home broadband provider means you are connecting directly, while a datacentre or a known VPN network means something is sitting in front of you.
Why it is worth hiding
On its own, one address in one server log is harmless. The problem is accumulation. The same address appears in the logs of every site you visit, so an ad network embedded across thousands of sites can stitch those visits into one profile without ever needing a cookie. Your internet provider sees the other half — every domain you connect to, timestamped — and in many countries is required to keep that record for months.
A VPN breaks both halves. Sites see the VPN server's address, shared with everyone else connected to it, so a single profile cannot be built from it. Your provider sees an encrypted connection to one server and nothing about what travels inside it. That is the entire mechanism; the rest is a question of which provider you trust to run the server, which is what our reviews spend their time on.
Checking that the VPN is doing its job
Connecting is not the same as being covered. A browser can leak your real address around a working VPN through WebRTC, a feature designed for video calls that quietly asks your system for its addresses. Questions people ask
What is an IP address, in plain terms?
It is the return address your internet connection puts on every request you send. Without one, a website would have no idea where to send the page back to. The catch is that it is unique enough to identify your connection, and it is attached to every single thing you do online.
What can someone actually learn from my IP address?
Your rough location — usually the city or the nearest large one, not your street — plus your internet provider and whether you are on home broadband, mobile data or a datacentre. Websites and ad networks use it to link your visits together over time, even across different browsers on the same connection.
Does a VPN change my IP address?
Yes. Once connected, sites see the VPN server's address instead of yours, and it is shared with everyone else on that server, which is what makes it hard to trace back. Your internet provider can still see that you are connected to a VPN, but not which sites you open through it.
Why does the location shown look wrong?
IP geolocation is a database lookup, not GPS. It maps a block of addresses to wherever the provider registered them, which can be a different city or, with mobile networks, hundreds of miles away. Being slightly wrong is normal; being in the right country almost always is.
Is my IP address private information?
It is not secret — you hand it to every server you contact — but it is personal data under GDPR, and it is the thread that ties an advertising profile together. That is the difference between it being harmless on its own and worth hiding in aggregate.
Do you store the address you show me?
No. We read it from your request, show it back to you, and that is the end of it. There is no database of visitor addresses behind this page.
