Best VPN for Valorant in 2026

Start with the honest part: a VPN will not lower your ping in Valorant on a healthy connection. It adds a hop, and in our tests that cost between 4 ms and 14 ms depending on the provider. Anyone selling a VPN as a performance upgrade for a competitive shooter is selling you something.

There are three real reasons to run one anyway — an ISP throttling game traffic, a network at school or work blocking Riot's servers, and DDoS protection if you stream or play ranked with people you do not know. For all three, the number that matters is added latency, and NordVPN's 4 ms was the lowest we measured.

    NordVPN

    Lowest latency#1 overall · 9.7/10

4 ms added on a nearby server — the smallest of any VPN we tested, and beneath what most people can perceive. 118 countries means a nearby server almost always exists, which matters more than any 'gaming' server label.

    Best value#2 overall · 9.4/10

6 ms added, $2.19 a month, unlimited devices. Two milliseconds behind the leader for less than half the price — the sensible pick unless you are benchmarking.

    ExpressVPN

    Most stable connection#3 overall · 9.1/10

7 ms added, and the fewest reconnects of anything we tested over long sessions. A VPN that drops mid-match is worse than a slightly slower one that does not.

    Most private#8 overall · 8.0/10

8 ms added, no account needed, and the strongest privacy record of any provider here. A flat rate rather than a discounted long plan, which suits anyone who does not want to commit to two years.

How we picked

Ranked purely on added latency to the nearest server, measured three times per server with the median taken, on a 940 Mbps line. Connection stability over a two-hour session was the tie-breaker. We did not test or rank any provider on its ability to reach a different matchmaking region, for the reason in the FAQ below.

All scores come from the same monthly tests on the same rig — how we test. Rank order on this page is by the category criteria, not by commission.

Questions

Does a VPN lower ping in Valorant?

Not by itself. Routing through an extra server adds distance, which cost between 4 ms and 14 ms in our tests. A VPN only lowers ping when it bypasses something already slowing you down — an ISP shaping game traffic, or a bad route between your ISP and Riot's data centre.

Can you get banned for using a VPN in Valorant?

Using a VPN is not itself against Riot's rules, and plenty of players run one for network reasons. What does get accounts actioned is using one to reach a different matchmaking region for easier opponents — queue-dodging into low-rank lobbies. That breaches the terms of service and Riot enforces it. We are not going to explain how to do it.

Which VPN adds the least ping?

NordVPN, at 4 ms on a nearby server in our tests. Surfshark added 6 ms and ExpressVPN 7 ms. The gap between the best and worst provider was 10 ms — about half a frame at 60 fps, and less than most people can feel.

Will a VPN stop DDoS attacks in Valorant?

It hides your real IP from anyone who might target it, which removes the usual mechanism. That matters most if you stream, play with strangers in ranked, or have been targeted before. It does nothing about an attack aimed at Riot's own servers.

Should I use a gaming server or the nearest one?

The nearest one. 'Gaming' labels are marketing; distance is physics. Pick the closest server with a low load percentage, use WireGuard rather than OpenVPN, and plug in an ethernet cable — that setup costs you a few milliseconds and nothing else.
