How to use a VPN with Netflix

The mechanics take about a minute. The part worth reading is which VPNs still work, because that is what actually varies — and a proxy error is not the failure most people assume it is.

Which VPNs actually unblock Netflix

We have not tested this ourselves. Netflix maintains lists of IP ranges belonging to known VPNs and data centres, and blocks them; providers respond by rotating addresses. That cycle runs continuously, which means a table claiming to know "what unblocks Netflix this month" is already going stale by the time you read it — ours would be no exception.

One thing is worth pulling out, because it is not a test result but a published fact: Mullvad is not a failure, it is a choice. Its own documentation tells people not to buy it for streaming. Unblocking means continuously rotating IP addresses ahead of detection, and Mullvad has decided not to run its network that way. It is an excellent VPN for other reasons — just not this one.

The setup

   Pick a VPN that unblocks the region you want

   Not the one with the best overall score — the one that reaches your catalogue. The table above is the check.

   Install the provider's app on the device you will watch on

   A browser extension covers only that browser tab. The Netflix app on a phone, a Fire TV or a smart TV will keep using your real connection, which is a confusing failure because the VPN app still shows "connected".

   Connect to the country, and wait for Connected

   Opening Netflix mid-handshake is a common cause of a spurious region error.

   Clear Netflix's cache

   This is the step people skip. Netflix caches your last known region and will keep showing it. On Android and Fire TV: Settings → Applications → Netflix → Clear cache. On iOS: delete and reinstall. In a browser: open a private window.

   Open Netflix and check the catalogue

   You should see that region's own titles. A proxy error at this point is normal and fixable — see below.

The proxy error, and the thirty-second fix

"You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy." This is the message everyone hits eventually, and it is worth understanding rather than panicking about.

Netflix maintains lists of IP ranges belonging to data centres and known VPNs. When it recognises one, it refuses to stream. VPN providers respond by rotating addresses. This goes on continuously, which means a specific server that worked last week can be blocked today, and a server blocked today can work again next month.

So the error tells you one thing: that particular server is currently recognised. It says nothing about your VPN generally.

The fix, in order:

1. Disconnect the VPN.
2. Choose a different server in the same country. Most providers have dozens.
3. Clear the Netflix app's cache — or use a fresh private window in a browser.
4. Reconnect and try again.

Two or three servers usually resolves it. If four fail in the same country, try a different device or check whether your provider labels streaming servers — CyberGhost and PureVPN both do, which removes the guesswork entirely.

What a VPN does not fix

It does not give you Netflix for free. You still need a subscription. What changes is which regional shelf you are looking at.

It does not get around the terms of service. Netflix's terms prohibit using a VPN to access content outside your region. In practice they block servers rather than accounts, and we are not aware of a pattern of terminations for this — but the terms say what they say, and you should decide with that in front of you rather than discover it later.

It does not fix buffering caused by your own connection. If a nearby server buffers too, the problem is your Wi-Fi or the device, not the VPN. On a Fire TV Stick in particular, the device's own wireless chip is a much tighter bottleneck than any VPN — the Firestick guide covers that in detail.

It does not survive a logged-in account telling on you. Netflix knows your billing country regardless of where you connect from. Some regional pricing and payment behaviour follows the account, not the IP.

Devices worth knowing about

Phones and tablets — install the provider's app, not the browser extension. Clear cache via system settings.

Fire TV and Android TV — native apps exist for seven of the ten VPNs we rate. See the Firestick walkthrough.

Smart TVs (Samsung Tizen, LG webOS) — cannot run a VPN app at all. You need the VPN on your router, or a smart DNS feature that changes region without encrypting. NordVPN's SmartPlay does this without configuration.

Games consoles — same as smart TVs: router or nothing.

Laptops — the easiest case. App plus a private browser window.

The honest summary

If Netflix is the main reason you want a VPN, the choice is narrower than the marketing suggests: check the region you actually want against the table above, buy on a long plan with a refund window, and test it in the first week.

And when you hit a proxy error — and you will, eventually — remember it is a blocked server rather than a broken subscription. Change server, clear cache, carry on.
