The verdict, scores and trade-offs
The bottom line
PureVPN is the value pick for people who think in years, not months. Its long plans are the cheapest we rate, it has an always-on audit programme and useful add-ons like port forwarding and a dedicated IP, and it unblocked most streaming services. Speeds on distant servers and a Netflix UK failure this month keep it at #5.

Privacy and logging
PureVPN's privacy record has two chapters. In 2017 it supplied connection logs in a US cyberstalking case, which contradicted its marketing at the time. The company then rewrote its policy to a genuine no-logs one and, unusually, set up an always-on audit arrangement with KPMG, under which the auditor can inspect the systems at any time without notice. It is now registered in the British Virgin Islands.
We can only measure the present: leak tests were clean on every platform, WireGuard is the default protocol, and the audit is ongoing rather than a one-off. We rate the privacy sub-score at 8.7 — solid, with the history and the lack of fully RAM-only infrastructure holding it below the top three.
Speed
PureVPN averaged 466 Mbps on our 940 Mbps line, fifth overall. Nearby servers were quick — US East retained well over half the baseline — but Singapore and Australia dropped to around 45%, the largest long-distance fall-off in the top five. Added latency was about 11 ms. It is more than fast enough for 4K streaming and everyday use; it is not the pick for someone who benchmarks.
Streaming: 12 of 14
Netflix US and Japan, Prime Video, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer all worked. Netflix UK failed on three of the four servers we tried, and DAZN failed twice, so both count as crosses this month. PureVPN's app labels servers by streaming service, which helps, and the results can change month to month — check the date on the matrix.
Torrenting
P2P-optimised servers are marked in the app and port forwarding is available as a paid add-on, something none of the top three offer. Combined with the low long-term price, that makes PureVPN a reasonable budget torrenting choice, though PIA includes port forwarding at no extra cost.
Apps and ease of use
The apps have improved a lot in the last few years: a simple connect screen, modes for streaming, security and file sharing, and clear server labels. They cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV, with browser extensions and router support. Kill switch and split tunnelling are present. Our one recurring irritation was the macOS app needing a manual reconnect after the laptop woke from sleep; the Windows and mobile apps did not have the problem. Ten simultaneous connections.
Add-ons are a PureVPN theme: a dedicated IP, port forwarding, and a password manager and file encryption tool in the higher bundles. Buy only what you will use; the base VPN is where the value is.
Customer support
24/7 live chat responded quickly and handled a refund request without pushback. The help centre is comprehensive, if a little cluttered with upsells.
Is PureVPN safe?
Yes, on today's evidence: audited no-logs on an ongoing basis, a BVI base, modern protocols and clean leak results. The 2017 incident is the reason to read the policy rather than the marketing — and the policy now says the right things and is checked by an outside firm.
Is PureVPN worth it?
At about $2.14 a month on the 2-year plan — and often less on longer promotions — PureVPN is the cheapest way to get a large, audited VPN with streaming support. It is worth it if you want to pay once and forget it for years, need a dedicated IP, or want the widest choice of countries. It is not worth it if you connect to far-away servers a lot, if Netflix UK is your service, or if you would rather pay a little more for the consistency of NordVPN or Surfshark.
Who should buy PureVPN — and who shouldn't
Buy it for the lowest long-term price, a dedicated IP, or port forwarding on a budget. Choose Surfshark for a similar price with better speeds and unlimited devices, NordVPN for the best all-round performance, and PIA if port forwarding is the main reason you are here.

PureVPN: common questions
Is PureVPN safe?
Yes. PureVPN's no-logs policy is covered by an always-on audit arrangement with KPMG, it is based in the British Virgin Islands, and it passed all of our DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leak tests. In 2017 it provided connection data in a US case; it moved to a true no-logs policy and audits after that, and nothing since has contradicted them.
Is PureVPN trustworthy?
Its current policy is audited on an ongoing basis rather than once, which is stronger than most. The 2017 logging incident is part of its history and the reason it changed; we weigh the audited present more than the past, but you should know both.
Does PureVPN work with Netflix?
Netflix US and Japan worked this month; Netflix UK failed on three of four servers, so it is a cross in our matrix. Prime Video, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer worked.
Is PureVPN good for torrenting?
Yes. P2P servers are marked in the app and port forwarding is available as an add-on, which the top three don't offer.
How much is PureVPN?
About $2.14 a month on the 2-year plan in our data this month, with even lower rates on longer promotional plans. There is a 31-day money-back guarantee.
