IceVPN Review (2026): The Lifetime Deal, and Everything Around It

Where this review comes from

Every other review on this site starts with a month on our test rig. This one does not, yet. IceVPN is new enough, and small enough, that we wrote it up first from what already exists — one independent hands-on test, one investigation of the company's paperwork, the Trustpilot record and its own subreddit — and we will replace the reported numbers with ours on the next test cycle. Each figure below says who measured it. Where two sources disagree, both are given.

The short version of the evidence is this. The only reviewer who has run IceVPN through a full test, Cloudwards, scored its speed at 85% and everything else between 50% and 75%, and concluded it could not recommend it in its current state. Users who bought it are split almost down the middle — half of the Trustpilot reviews are five stars, a quarter are one or two — and the split follows a pattern. People who wanted a cheap, quick connection for browsing and banking on Windows are happy. People who wanted streaming, a Mac kill switch, an iPhone app, or support that answers are not.

Two of the findings below are things you can check yourself in thirty seconds, which is why they carry more weight here than any review's opinion: the date the Android app was last updated, and whether an iOS app exists at all.

Privacy and logging

IceVPN is run by Ice Privacy Ltd, a Gibraltar company incorporated in July 2023 — company number 123597 — by the people behind Icedrive, the encrypted cloud-storage service based in Swansea. Gibraltar is a reasonable place for a VPN to live: no data-retention law aimed at VPNs, outside the Five Eyes proper, and with a legal system that does not make emergency disclosure easy. The jurisdiction is not the problem.

The problems are further down. There is no independent audit. Every source agrees on this, and when a Trustpilot reviewer asked for one in August 2026 the company replied that it would look into it, which is not a date. The no-logs policy itself says connection metadata is automatically deleted within fifteen minutes of a session ending, which is a reasonable design if it is true; nobody outside the company has checked. Cloudwards read the full privacy policy and called it highly concerning, and State of Surveillance found that signup collects your full legal name, which a VPN has no obvious need for.

The servers are not IceVPN's. The most useful thing on the IceVPN subreddit is a piece of user research showing that IceVPN runs on Atom by Secure, a white-label VPN backend, and tracing Atom and Secure back to Gaditek — the company whose founders also founded PureVPN. The company link is the community's work and not confirmed by either side; the white-label part IceVPN has itself disclosed, indirectly, and a founder-era Reddit reply described the servers as rented. It means the machines your traffic crosses are configured and operated by someone else, and IceVPN's no-logs promise is only as good as that arrangement. Compare that with Mullvad or PIA, which own or directly control their hardware and have had it tested in court.

Leak protection, the part that can be checked from outside, is the one area that comes out well. Cloudwards passed both its DNS and its IPv6 leak tests — IPv6 is disabled outright in the app, which is the blunt but effective way to close that hole — and Reddit users reported clean DNS and WebRTC results in January 2026. The one dissent is a Trustpilot reviewer who saw WebRTC leaks on some servers, and WebRTC is worth checking yourself on whichever server you settle on, with our DNS leak test and WebRTC leak test.

One oddity from the same review: Cloudwards reported receiving abuse warnings after connecting for the first time, which points at how the rented IP ranges are managed rather than at anything IceVPN's software did.

The provisional privacy score is 5.5: sound jurisdiction and working leak protection, undermined by no audit, rented infrastructure and a policy that has raised flags with the one reviewer who read it closely.

Speed

We have not measured IceVPN. What follows is what other people measured, and it is the most interesting part of the evidence — because the headline is better than the detail.

Cloudwards ran it in July 2026 on a 55 Mbps line and published every figure. On its nearest server, Portland, it recorded 55 Mbps down, 6 up and 20 ms ping — identical to the unprotected line. No measurable loss at all. Another US server managed 54.3 Mbps at 59 ms. That is genuinely good, and it is where the 85% speed score comes from.

Read the rest of the table and it falls away quickly:

Singapore returned a third of the line. Cloudwards also reported swings of more than 30 Mbps between repeated runs on the same server, which is the word that recurs in every account of this service: inconsistent.

One caveat matters for reading those numbers next to ours. Holding 55 Mbps out of 55 is a much easier thing to do than holding 700 out of 940 — a slow line hides a lot, because the tunnel is nowhere near the bottleneck. Our own rig runs at 940 Mbps precisely so that the encryption overhead has somewhere to show up. Until IceVPN goes through it, "no measurable loss" means no measurable loss on a 55 Mbps connection, and nothing more.

The other number in circulation comes from Reddit, where a user called it faster than NordVPN and helpfully posted the figures: on the same public Wi-Fi in November 2024, no VPN gave 308 Mbps down and 545 up, IceVPN 138 and 52, NordVPN 219 and 401. NordVPN was faster by a wide margin on the same line.

Provisional speed score 7.0 — good nearby, weak at distance, unreliable between runs, and untested on a connection fast enough to prove anything.

Streaming

This is where IceVPN does worst on the evidence, and it is the one area where the two hands-on tests partly contradict each other.

This is the thinnest part of the record, and worth being precise about. Cloudwards' review measures speed and security and does not publish streaming results, so the only hands-on streaming test we found is State of Surveillance's, in July 2026: Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ all failed; BBC iPlayer, Max and Prime Video worked.

Around that sit two user reports. A Trustpilot reviewer could not reach ITVX, and noted that Proton VPN — which she had used before — handled Netflix, Disney+ and ITVX where IceVPN could not. Another said OpenAI's Sora rejected the connection outright while NordVPN's was accepted.

So: three of the big streaming services failed the one proper test, three passed it, and seven of the fourteen we normally check have no published result at all and are marked n/r above. One tester is not a pattern, and a service that works this month can break next month — that is why we re-check ours monthly rather than testing once. If streaming is your reason for wanting a VPN, our best-for-streaming list is built from services that unblocked these on our rig this month, and IceVPN is not on it.

Provisional streaming score 3.0.

Torrenting

P2P is allowed, and one Trustpilot reviewer who bought the lifetime plan describes torrenting as fast on both desktop and Android. There is no port forwarding — a Reddit user lists it as the one thing missing — which caps seeding performance and rules IceVPN out for anyone who cares about ratios. There is a kill switch, with the reliability caveats in the next section.

For a cheap torrenting VPN with port forwarding, PIA and Proton VPN both have it and both have been tested here.

Apps and ease of use

IceVPN launched in early access in November 2024 with Windows and macOS apps, and the two years since have been a story of platforms arriving late or not at all.

The checkable facts, as of 11 September 2026. The Android app was last updated on 7 October 2025 — eleven months ago — and holds 3.7 stars from 63 ratings across 10,000-plus installs. That date sits awkwardly beside the company's August 2026 Trustpilot replies promising an Android update was coming. The iOS app we could not find at all: icevpn.com lists iOS as supported, but no IceVPN app from Ice Privacy Ltd came up in an App Store search. In October 2025 the company told its own Icedrive forum the app was "still in development" with no ETA; in August 2026 it told Trustpilot it was one to two weeks away. Linux has no client — you download OpenVPN configuration files from your account page, one per server, and connect manually. There is no Android TV, Fire TV or Apple TV app, which one reviewer discovered after buying it for an Nvidia Shield.

Then there is what the apps do and do not do, which is the part most likely to matter to you. Cloudwards found the kill switch and split tunnelling are Windows-only, with neither present in the macOS app despite the marketing, and macOS cannot even choose its own protocol — the app picks. If you are a Mac household and you are buying this for the kill switch, you are buying something that is not there.

The bug list from user reports is long: settings that reset themselves roughly monthly and break split tunnelling when they do, an app that does not recover after the machine sleeps, unreliable auto-reconnect, a tray icon that does not show connection state, a slow "quick connect", and a kill switch that did not fire on a manual disconnect. Cloudwards rated ease of use 50% and reported the app freezing. Against that, the company says the Windows 2.0 update of 18 August 2026 fixed all of it — stricter kill switch, better auto-redial, dynamic tray icons — and a reviewer on the latest builds reports no issues. Plausible, and exactly the kind of claim our own test will settle.

Protocols are WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec. There is a malware and pop-up blocker, and an unusual extra: a cybersecurity dashboard with a data-breach checker and IP and email reputation lookups, which runs on paid credits.

Provisional apps score 5.0, and it is the score most likely to move in either direction once we run the 2.0 apps ourselves.

Pricing

Prices from icevpn.com on 11 September 2026: $4.99 a month on the rolling plan, $2.99 a month on the yearly plan billed as $35.88 against a listed regular price of $59.88, and a $249 lifetime plan against a listed regular price of $398.40. There is no two-year plan. The Pro subscription covers five simultaneous connections — counted as connections, one reviewer notes, rather than logged-in devices — across 67-plus countries and 85-plus cities.

The free plan is the most generous on this site: 20 GB a month, three countries, one device. That beats Windscribe's 10 GB, and unlike Proton VPN's unlimited free tier it lets you choose the location. It is also the honest way to try the service before paying anything, given the refund confusion below.

Three cautions. The prices move, a lot, and recently. In July 2026 Cloudwards recorded $8.99 a month, $4.99 on the yearly plan, a two-year plan at $3.99 and a free tier of 3 GB. Two months later the monthly is $4.99, the yearly $2.99, the free tier 20 GB — and the two-year plan has gone. Every one of those five numbers changed in eight weeks. Reddit buyers paid $179 for lifetime in January 2025, and a ten-upvote post says the lifetime price was raised in the middle of a promotion. The yearly plan's $35.88 is shown against a $59.88 "regular" price, so expect renewal at the higher figure — about $4.99 a month — unless the promotion is still running when it renews; our price calculator uses that renewal rate. And the lifetime plan comes and goes: Cloudwards reported it unavailable in July, and it was back in September.

The lifetime arithmetic: $249 buys about seven years at the promotional yearly rate, or just over four at the regular one. Icedrive's own lifetime plan has been running since around 2019 and its users report it has been reliable, which is why they trust this one. It is still a bet on a two-year-old service with rented servers.

Payment is by card, Google Pay and Apple Pay through Stripe, in USD, EUR, GBP or INR. No crypto.

Customer support

Email and ticket only, plus a community forum shared with Icedrive. No live chat. Cloudwards said there was no real customer support; two Trustpilot reviewers and a Reddit thread report tickets that were never answered, one of them after the refund window closed, and a third describes weak forum responses. Against that, the company replies to almost every Trustpilot review, positive or negative, usually within days, and one reviewer calls the support excellent. The pattern looks like a small team that is responsive in public and patchy in private. If a problem arises, post where they can see it.

Is IceVPN safe?

For the everyday case — public Wi-Fi, hiding browsing from an ISP, a clean IP for banking — probably, with two settings changed: turn on IPv6 leak protection, which Cloudwards found off by default, and check the kill switch behaves on your platform before you trust it, because on macOS it may not exist and on Windows it has a reported history of not firing on manual disconnect.

For anything where a log would matter — journalism, activism, a hostile network operator — no, not on current evidence. No audit, no court test, rented infrastructure, a concerning policy and a full-legal-name signup add up to a service you would have to take on faith. Mullvad, Proton VPN and PIA have all had their no-logs claims tested by police or courts and held.

Is IceVPN worth it?

At $2.99 a month it competes with Surfshark and PureVPN, both of which are tested here, both of which stream, and both of which have audits. On a like-for-like yearly plan there is no reason to choose IceVPN over either. Its case is the lifetime plan — nothing else on this site offers one — and the free tier. If $249 once, for a fast, basic VPN with an uncertain future, appeals more than $60 a year for a finished one, that is a legitimate preference and the users who made it mostly seem content.

Who should buy IceVPN — and who shouldn't

Buy it if you are on Windows, you already use and trust Icedrive, you want a cheap connection for browsing and banking rather than streaming, and you are treating the lifetime price as a wager you can afford to lose. Use the 20 GB free plan first — it costs nothing and it settles the speed question for your own connection better than any review can.

Don't buy it if you are on a Mac and expect a kill switch, or on an iPhone at all until an app actually appears in the App Store. Don't buy it for streaming, for a TV box, for anything privacy-critical, or if you need support that answers. And whichever way you lean, note the date at the top of this page: it will be rewritten from our own numbers on the next test cycle.
