This is the comparison IceVPN's own users make: a Reddit poster claimed IceVPN felt faster than NordVPN, then posted numbers showing the opposite — 219 Mbps down for NordVPN against IceVPN's 138 on the same line (r/IceVPN, Nov 2024). NordVPN carries a published score of 8.7 built on a Deloitte-audited no-logs policy, RAM-only servers, 118 countries and apps for every major platform, though we have not run our own speed or streaming tests on it. IceVPN is provisionally scored 4.8, has no audit, rents its servers, and the one hands-on review we found (Cloudwards) called its speed inconsistent — full-strength nearby, down to a third of baseline in Singapore, swinging more than 30 Mbps between runs. What IceVPN has that NordVPN doesn't is a $249 lifetime plan and a 20 GB free tier.

Is IceVPN faster than NordVPN?
Not on any evidence we've found. The Reddit post that made the claim included its own numbers: on the same public Wi-Fi line, NordVPN managed 219 Mbps down and IceVPN 138. Cloudwards separately measured IceVPN doing well on a nearby server but losing about two-thirds of its speed and swinging by 30+ Mbps at distance. We have not run NordVPN through the same test.
Is IceVPN a good NordVPN alternative?
Only for a narrow buyer: someone who wants to pay once and accepts the risk of losing $249 if the service folds. For everyone else, NordVPN offers an audited no-logs policy, apps for every platform and live chat support that IceVPN's four-platform, no-audit setup doesn't match. NordVPN's yearly plan is pricier than IceVPN's, though — a one-year buyer on a tight budget should look at Surfshark or PureVPN before IceVPN.
Which is better for privacy, NordVPN or IceVPN?
NordVPN by a wide margin. Its no-logs policy was audited by Deloitte in 2024 and its servers run from RAM on hardware it controls. IceVPN has no independent audit, rents white-label server capacity from a third party, and the one reviewer who read its privacy policy closely (Cloudwards) called it concerning. Both sit in reasonable jurisdictions — Panama and Gibraltar — so that part is a wash.
