IceVPN has the lower introductory rate, but over three years NordVPN costs $14.40 less once both renewals are counted — which is the number you actually pay. Is IceVPN faster than NordVPN?
Not on any published measurement. The Reddit post that made the claim included the numbers: on the same public Wi-Fi line, NordVPN managed 219 Mbps down and 401 up, IceVPN 138 down and 52 up. On our rig NordVPN averages 712 Mbps; IceVPN has not been through it yet. Cloudwards did rate IceVPN's speed well on nearby servers, with the caveat that results swung by 30 Mbps or more between runs.
Is IceVPN a good NordVPN alternative?
Only for one specific buyer: someone who wants to pay once and never again, and can afford to lose $249 if the service folds. For everyone else NordVPN does everything IceVPN does and everything it does not — streaming, audits, TV apps, support — for $3.39 a month on the two-year plan. NordVPN's yearly plan is dearer than IceVPN's, though, so a one-year buyer on a tight budget should look at Surfshark or PureVPN before IceVPN.
Which is better for privacy, NordVPN or IceVPN?
NordVPN by a wide margin. Its no-logs policy was audited by Deloitte in 2024 and its servers run from RAM on hardware it controls. IceVPN's policy has never been independently checked, its servers are white-label capacity rented from a third party, and the one reviewer who read the privacy policy closely found it concerning. Both are in reasonable jurisdictions — Panama and Gibraltar — so that part is a wash.
